Surf Products and Accessories-What Do You Need For Surfing

Surf Products and Accessories-What Do You Need For Surfing

Surfing is one of the best recreational sports and an activity that is healthy, fun, and thrilling. Surfing is an activity that can be enjoyed by all. So, what type surfboard, surfing product or accessories will give you a day of fun and enjoyment? What do you need to go surfing? Surf world tour is an exciting as you witness the extreme performance of surfers in that competition.

Waves are the most important thing you need for surfing. You may ask, what type waves do I need? The answer to this question is simple; any wave that is available to you. There are all types and sizes of waves from rippling little ones to the giant waves of Hawaii. Recreational surfers need and prefer the little waves. However, you need the proper surf products and accessories for all conditions.

In order to enjoy the waves, you need to be prepared. This means that you may need several different surfboard types and surfing devices along with the necessary accessories to ride the waves that are available for you to surf on any given day. Every day is different and the conditions will dictate that you need a different type surfboard or surfing device to take advantage of the waves at your local beach break.

Here’s a list of surfing products and surfing devices for you to consider:

  • Swimfins
  • Bodyboard
  • Skimboard
  • Wakeboard
  • Soft surfboard
  • Short surfboard
  • Long surfboard
  • SUP

On some days, the waves will be perfect little peelers for bodysurfing. In order to really take advantage of the waves, you need to have a pair of good fitting swimfins. Fins will allow you swim faster and to get into the wave earlier, which will allow you to ride the shoulder of the wave just like the board surfers and boogie board riders do. You want to get on the corner of the wave and ride the green water out of the soup. This is a thrill and you need swimfins to catch the waves and stay with it. The fins will allow you to also ride the bigger waves as you get more proficient. Bodysurfing is a great way to have fun with your friends. Getting your group together and going to a spot that is suited for bodysurfing is really fun.
Body boarding, or boogie boarding as I like to call it after my friend Tom Morey who invented the little board, is something you can do under almost any surf condition. It is especially fun in little waves, which allow little kids, those who are beginning surfers and senior citizens to ride and enjoy the sensation of riding waves. You can ride the foam and the little waves right up onto the sand. As you get more experienced, you will want to ride the shoulders of the waves like the surfboard riders. Eventually if you are experienced and good in the water, you can ride the bigger waves as some do in Hawaii and other select surfing spots throughout the world.

Skimboarding is another surfing sport that does not require large waves and is done right near the shoreline, typically in smaller waves or even no waves at all. Some kids even skim on wet grass where there are little knolls. Another thing you can do when there is no surf is to ride your wakeboard. Wakeboarding is done behind a boat and can be done on wakeboards made especially for being towed behind a boat or you can ride your short, long, soft and hard surfboards. Some surfers, when they get proficient, let go of the rope and surf the waves generated by the wake of the boat. Don’t let the fact that there are no waves to surf at your chosen surf spot keep you from enjoying the water and riding the surfboard or other surfing device that will make your day a fun filled experience.

You really need to have at least one surfboard type that you can use for most surfing conditions. It’s better if you have more than one, but stay with what you can afford. Selecting a surfboard or surfboards is a fun process, but selecting the right one is very important. You ask yourself, should I buy a soft surfboard or a hard surfboard? What length board should I buy? What are the surfing conditions where I will be surfing the most? Is it shore break, point break, big, average or small type surf? What is my experience level that will justify the surfboard type that I choose? All of these questions need to be addressed. The surfboard type and design that you choose should be suitable for the normal conditions of the waves you will be surfing most.

If you live on a lake, bay, lagoon, river, or an ocean where there are calm surf conditions, you will probably want to have a SUP, which is also known as a Standup Paddleboard. SUPs have become one of the most popular surfing devices because they are large, stable and the fact that they are also very easy to learn to paddle and ride. Persons of all ages can ride them and the SUP has become a board that all members of a family can own and ride. SUPing has become a terrific group and family activity, which requires no surf and can be done on almost any calm body of water.

How about surfing accessories? What accessories do you need? Here’s a list of the more essential ones:

  • Wetsuit(s)
  • Rash guard
  • Wax
  • Surfboard leash
  • Variety of fins and fin key
  • Travel bags
  • Surfboard rack for your car
  • Plastic container for wetsuits and changing
  • Large towel
  • Board shorts; more than one pair
  • Sunscreen
  • Hide-a-key
  • Carry bag
  • Money
  • Water
  • Swimfins

Surfing is a sport that is conducted away from home. I recommend that you have all of these accessory items listed above to meet the conditions of the water and the surf activity of the day. You will need different items on different days, but on some days you will use all of them. Plan ahead and you will have success and fun on your surfing days.
Before you go surfing, you should check the local surf report from an online source like Surfline.com. What is the water temperature? Do you need a wetsuit? If so, what thickness suit do you need? Do you need booties or a hood to keep you warm? Maybe all you need is a spring wetsuit or maybe the water is warm enough to wear only your swim suit. The choices are many. Some of the wetsuits have short sleeves and or short legs or combinations of long legs and short sleeves or vice versa. I would suggest that in moderate climates you have a spring suit and a full suit. The spring suit should be 2.0 and the full suit should probably be 4/3 or 3/2 depending on the prevailing water temps. Rash guards should be worn under wetsuits to prevent chaffing. You may also want to wear one on a sunny day to prevent sunburn. These items will be worn for all types of surfing.

Don’t forget to bring wax and a leash for your board. It seems that surfers forget this item or lose it in the water and are always looking around for some. You need specific wax for the water temperature conditions. Ask the surf shop people what kind you need or read the labels and use the type you need based on the surf report. A handy tip is to keep your surfboard waxed and ready to surf at all times. It’s no fun not to have any wax and go out into the surf with a slippery deck surface. You’ll be slipping and sliding and falling off your board and end up not having a good surf. The other thing you need is a leash, especially if you have a long paddle out, rough surf, or if you are surfing in a rocky area. Loosing you board and having to swim back in is no fun. If your surfboard is damaged in the rocks, that makes it all the worse and will ruin your day fast.

The rest of the items on the list are self explanatory. Make a check list and make sure you check your accessory items before you leave to go surfing. There is no use leaving something behind that will cause you to have a bad day.

Asphalt vs. Concrete Driveway: Cost and Maintenance

When it’s time to construct a new driveway, you have to choose your materials, and the most common are asphalt and concrete. Both materials have their benefits and drawbacks, and your choice will largely depend on your budget, aesthetics, and where you live. The cost of concrete driveway is somehow expensive due to a fact that it needs to be layed out again.

Cost of Installation

Concrete driveways generally cost around 45 percent more to install in comparison to asphalt driveways. As a result, asphalt has a higher number of buyers in most areas. However, it is important to consider the toughness and longevity of both materials, as poor resistance to the elements and the need for frequent repairs can make any driveway more costly in the long run.

Climate Compatibility

Asphalt driveways are better suited to colder climates because constant exposure to high temperatures tends to make asphalt soft. In such circumstances, cracks and grooves may appear on the driveway, necessitating repair; however, it is easier to fix cracks in asphalt than in concrete.

Concrete driveways are more resistant to high temperatures, but in very cold climates, care must be taken to ensure that the base of the driveway is filled with compact gravel. If the foundation is not laid properly, concrete driveways are adversely affected by frost heave. Salt used on roads to combat ice and snow will also damage your concrete if you aren’t careful.

Sealing Requirement

Asphalt driveways must be sealed every four to five years. Asphalt is petroleum based and is very elastic at the time of installation. Over time, the oils are oxidized and lose their moisture. The color of the asphalt lightens to gray, and the structure becomes more brittle. This usually takes a few months to happen, which is why the first sealing application must be done around eight months after installation. If the asphalt is sealed immediately after installing, it will still be soft and will remain that way. This will make it less resistant to breaks and ruts.

Longevity

If maintained properly and sealed regularly, asphalt driveways will last around 30 years. When not properly cared for, an asphalt driveway can deteriorate considerably in as little as five years, leading to costly repairs or replacements. Concrete driveways can last 50 years or longer with lesser maintenance and repair costs. A sealer applied every few years is very beneficial on concrete driveways as well.

Appearance

Concrete driveways are available in a wider variety of choices than asphalt. Stained and stamped concrete driveways offer a distinct appeal, and cost less in the long run. You also don’t risk carrying in oil stains into the house, which may happen when you walk on the stained surface of an asphalt driveway. However, concrete driveways tend to be lighter, making any stains on them more visible than they would be on a dark asphalt surface.

The main advantage of asphalt driveways is the low installation cost. If you consider durability and maintenance costs, concrete driveways can definitely be the more economical choice.

Realize Your Dream of Owning a Luxury Home

When we walk around an elite neighborhood comprising of country estates, elegant mansions, and chic penthouse condominiums, the dream of owning one such real estate is rekindled at the bottom of our minds. Like me, you must also have asked a question to your mind – who are the people who buy these stylish homes? What are their income and lifestyle profiles? Let us explore all these questions in this article, and provide you some useful tips for buying a luxury home in case you decide to buy one. High end home builders Sydney work diligently in their design, accurate measurement of floor plans, and ensure best quality for their clients.

The profile of a luxury home buyer, as discovered by a survey conducted by a banker is as follows:

• 31% pay full cash at the time of purchasing the house.
• The predominant buyers of luxury homes are top executives of big corporate houses.
• 67% of the buyers belong to the “baby boom” generation (between ages 35 and 55)
• 88% of the luxury home owners are married.
• If you think about luxury home amenities, then designer kitchens come up as the first priority area.
• 89% of the luxury home buyers want their dream home to contain a minimum of four to five rooms.
• Nearly half of the luxury homes sold have an area between 4000 to 6000 square feet.

Let me now provide you some useful tips that might come to your help if you plan to buy your own luxury home.

When you are targeting a new luxury house, talk to your potential neighbors first. Try to dig out information from them about the problems they are facing. Simultaneously, also ask them about the amenities they are enjoying in their neighborhood. You also need to possess a copy of the current homeowner’s association rules, regulations and guidelines. The association rules of upscale neighborhoods generally have strict guidelines such as, home color, and the number of cars that can be parked in your driveway.

You need to check out the local zoning laws as well. It is a very important consideration that your home should be protected from township developments such as creation of a new super market, or a commercial office building. In a nutshell, try to gather as much information as possible about your neighborhood. This will enable you to quickly adapt to your new neighborhood.

While comparing two or more luxury homes, do not depend on their photos only. There are many beautiful and large homes that are not that photogenic and you need to see them in person to admire.

You need to have a good agent who can assist you in the purchase of your dream luxury home. The agent should be familiar with the area of your target home. If you are eyeing a high-end property, then you might face certain restrictions to get access to them. Your agent can be the mediator in those cases. As the stake in a luxury house is quite high, your agent should be thorough and professional enough to seal the deal in your favor. The agent should be able to negotiate with financial institutions and lenders to make the home financing process a little easier for you.

Sometimes, bank can provide you some useful information about the luxury homes that are up for sale. If you have a bank that has attached a relation executive to you, approach him or her. They usually have a portfolio ready for luxury home buyers. Learn from them the difference between a pre-approval letter and a pre-qualification letter. To obtain finance from the bank, you need to keep all your financial documents up and handy. In this niche, high-end market, you should be able to show your proof of income to the bank.

To become safe and secure after the purchase, you need to get title insurance for the property that you have bought. The title insurance will safeguard you from unwarranted problems that you have forgotten about. Make sure that you look at the exceptions page of the insurance papers.

You may need to redecorate your luxury home before you move in. You will save a lot of your headaches and multiply your happy moments after relocation to your new home. For example, you may want to opt for carpet flooring instead of hardwood; or paint the interiors of your house to a different color; or change your garden landscape to suit your taste. Contact with your interior decorator well in advance and roll out the renovation process.

Lastly, and most importantly, you need to evaluate your financial position before you take the plunge. You need to sit down with your realtor and figure out how much you can afford. Your realtor will tell you about every cost involved, including interest, taxes etc. Next, you need to sit down with the bank representatives who are willing to lend you. Watch on the repayment interest rate. Your realtor should act as a liaison between you and your banker. Take advantage of your realtor’s experience in this field. A luxury home in a posh locality can cost up to millions of dollars. Therefore, make an honest assessment about your credit worthiness before you jump to any decisions.

VENTURA, Calif. – Patagonia spent more than five years researching, developing and testing its Personal Surf Inflation (PSI) Vest for big wave surfing, and in 2014, received a United States patent for the innovations included in the PSI Vest. Today, the company announced it will bring the PSI Vest to market this spring for surfers who have met certain qualifications. Patagonia will also share this groundbreaking technology with other manufacturers in exchange for licensing fees that Patagonia will donate to help save Punta de Lobos, an iconic and endangered Chilean surf break. The surfing app sole purpose is to monitor the ongoing competition is surfing and that is reason why I always bring my phone with me.

In 2011, with ambassadors and friends paddling into continually bigger waves, Patagonia’s R&D team began developing the PSI Vest as an additional tool to help keep surfers safer in extraordinarily dangerous conditions. Patagonia’s innovations were tested by more than 400 of the best surfers in the world and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The U.S. Patent Office awarded Patagonia a patent on its innovative PSI Vest technology in 2014.

“Big wave riders all over the world are pushing the limits of what’s possible – surfing the biggest waves in the most powerful surf the oceans can offer. The PSI Vest has already played a huge role in giving surfers the confidence to take the sport of big wave surfing to the next level.” said Jason McCaffrey, Patagonia’s Director of Surf. “We invested heavily in testing and refining the PSI Vest, and sought feedback from hundreds of the best surfers in the world, in order to bring to market the best product possible. The PSI Vest will help reduce the risks involved in riding the world’s biggest waves, and I’m excited that licensing fees from our extensive R&D work will be another tool we can use to help protect coastal ecosystems.”

Knowing that the PSI Vest has helped save lives, Patagonia’s surf team is making its patented technology available to the industry so that others can bring their own variations of the vest to market. Patagonia will donate all patent licensing proceeds to Punta de Lobos Por Siempre, an effort led by Save the Waves and Chilean surfer and Patagonia ambassador Ramón Navarro to protect Punta de Lobos, one of the world’s greatest left points now threatened by development that would permanently alter its coastline. Patagonia has supported the campaign since 2014, when it released The Fisherman’s Son, a film about Navarro and his environmental work. The initiative has helped raise more than $362,000 to date, and Patagonia hopes that licensing the PSI Vest patent to others in the industry will help close the remaining $350,000 gap needed to fully protect the point.

Patagonia’s decision to donate any licensing fee proceeds back into the surf community was inspired by Bob Hurley, who in 1999 turned over his zipperless wetsuit patent to the NSSA so that all licensing fees would go to support the non-profit organization.

Later this Spring, Patagonia will begin selling the PSI Vest in its Ventura and Hale’iwa stores to surfers who have completed the BWRAG Big Wave Safety Course and who go through training with Patagonia during the purchase. Look for details on Patagonia’s website later this spring.

How to Have Success in Your Artistic Endeavors

Are you like that with your artistic endeavors? Are you able to focus upon what you are creating to the exclusion of all else? Do you say ‘no’ to anything that would stop you from completing, enjoying, or savoring it fully? A storyboard artist Sydney visualizes stories and sketches frames of the story piece by piece.

If you are like many artisans, you often do not stay focused on that one thing until it is done. In fact, the artistic brain finds it nearly impossible at times to stay focused. There are so many other delicious distractions – things to enjoy, learn or more things to create.

I can relate to this one completely. I too must constantly remind myself what it is I am meant to finish. This concept, one that I guide clients to embrace, came home to me more recently as I was developing and promoting The Artist Dream Forum.

The idea of having a community of artists come together to share, learn and grow together, came to me months ago. It was fun to think of all the artists or professionals in the field that could come on the monthly calls to help us all thrive and fully create. It was exciting to think of how we could all soar in the areas we are meant to soar. As the idea percolated and then became a reality, it was joyous to jot down the ideas and speak about the concept. My support network encouraged me to make it happen.

The thing is, as I got into the details of what it would take to make it happen, I suddenly found my creative spark and juices start to dry up. Suddenly the idea was draining and NOT fun! All those steps to get to the finish line were daunting. And of course, as is true for many of you too, I began to put off, procrastinate and set aside. I found myself more interested, suddenly, in something else. Surely that new thing would be the perfect thing to focus upon and certainly it MUST be easier to complete!

Fortunately, I have the benefit of speaking to artists and entrepreneurs every day about this very issue. As I guided my clients to stay the course, keep focused and finish what they began, I heard this for myself as well. As those very words would come out of my mouth, I would think to myself….”Hmmm, am I doing this for my own creative projects?” That very question helped me stick to it and get it done (and realize that I could get help with all those details).

How about you? Do you stay the course?

Peter Sanderson recently shared with me as we were developing his topic for the artist forum, “What Does It Truly Mean to be an Artist?” that it is critically important for an artist to focus upon one thing and do it well until they have complete success. Peter has many ways that he can express in his art, however, he has focused his energy, talents and creative process on one thing… MASKS.

With this guidance from Peter, here are three things for you to consider for you to have success in your artistic endeavors.

1. Stick to one thing. Stop jumping around from one thing to another in the hopes that one of those things will miraculously produce the outcome you desire. That outcome may be notoriety. It could be prosperity. It could be simply selling that one piece. Whatever, the outcome you desire, you must stick to it until you have those results.

I know this is challenging and I can hear the rumble of disagreement… “But Joan, I am creative and have so much talent in many areas. I cannot just stick to one thing when so many things come forth to be created!” I hear you. And I do not disagree. I am suggesting that you stick to one thing until it is completed otherwise NONE of it will be.

2. Focus, focus, focus. This goes along with #1. Once you decide upon the one thing you wish to do, create or develop, then you must focus upon it with full intent. Remember the dog with the bone? You must not give up until it’s done. Do you have to do it all at once? Of course not. Maybe you’ll have to bury it for a short time until you get back to it again. However, it MUST take priority until it is finished

If you find yourself doing other things, that is a sign of avoidance. Notice the signs… procrastination, distraction with other things, or a sudden interest in another class, modality, art approach or creative endeavor. That is just your discomfort surging forth and it’s important to breathe through it and stay focused on the one thing.

3. Let go of Perfection. That’s one that we all seem to have in some form or another. I know it’s a big one for me. Often the very reason you’ll give up on a project or art piece is because you cannot make it perfect

A client of mine did that very thing. She had a beautiful piece in which the hands, feet and face were sculpted in porcelain and the rest of the body was fabric. The piece ended up with flaws – a crack in the wrist was one. That’s when she stopped working on it. And so this beautiful piece sat for months and months, covered up, unfinished and ignored. Perfection is what kept that lovely jewel from being shared with the world.

We must let go of perfection. It will stop you every time sometimes before you even begin. Perfection will convince you that “you aren’t good enough, so why even try.”

This quote says it so well… “It is not irritating to be where one is. It is only irritating to think one would like to be somewhere else!” (John Cage) We always think it’s somewhere else, some other approach or someone else is better at it. Instead, just focus, focus, focus and you will be so much more satisfied, if not joyous, for having done so.
